video: 5 Quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. That Will Inspire You in Your Own Journey

As a little girl I always loved Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day because out of the many holidays and celebrations that happened every year this was a time that we celebrated someone who I could relate to. I related to him on two levels. One because he was a huge fan of Gandhi who was Indian like my father, and Dr. King was a black person like me. His words and his actions impressed onto my little heart the power of faith and courage. I realized that because of the work that he along with countless others including the amazing Rosa Parks, I was afforded wonderful opportunities here in America.

Today we can take inspiration from Dr. King's life and apply it to the way that we live our own lives. As artists and creatives I really believe that we have been given a gift to speak into the hard and messy parts of life. It's not always easy and it's always going to be unconventional but it's so very necessary that we be brave in what we create.

I have been guilty of being fearful of putting my convictions out there. I'm still learning how to express those convictions through the stories I write and the films that I produce. But I know that there are principles that we can take from the life of Dr. King as well as the ideas he shared through his gift of communicating. I hope that these quotes inspire you today.

Faith is taking the first step even when you can't see the whole stair case.

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter.

Only in the darkness can you see the stars.

No person has the right to rain on your dreams.

The ultimate measure of a man is not here he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenges and controversy.
